If you owe money, the creditor may use bailiffs, sheriffs or debt collectors as part of the process of recovering the debt. If any of these contact or visit you, they need to be handled in a manner that does not unnecessarily commit you to a more onerous agreement that is necessary.
ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN DEALING WITH BAILIFFS, DEBT COLLECTORS & DEBT RECOVERY AGENTS...
Whoever might visit you, (be it a bailiff or a debt collector,) always remember to ask them for identification. Bailiffs collecting for warrants must show their certificate from the county court when you ask them to. Bailiffs collecting unpaid council tax must show written authorisation from the local council.

Debt Collectors are not court officials and do not have the same powers as bailiffs so they have no right to enter your house and they cannot seize your possessions (except in certain circumstances – see recovery agents).
Do not enter into any agreement with a debt collector that you cannot keep. It is also unwise to enter into any agreement with them over just one debt if you have multiple debts because such an agreement might compromise your ability to pay your other debts.
A debt collector may say that they do not accept the offer that you have made to them and they may say that they will not accept such payments.
FACT: a Debt Collector cannot legally refuse to accept any payments that you make to them however small.

Some debt collectors act as Debt Recovery Agents for finance companies when the debtor has failed to make the contractual payments as required under the terms and conditions of a Finance or Hire Purchase (HP) Agreement. Most commonly this covers the finance on a car.

SHERIFFS
In England & Wales, Sheriffs are effectively the High Court equivalent of County Court Bailiffs and they are usually used when larger sums of money are owed.
